Recent trip to London and Dublin

I recently returned from a quick trip to London England and Dublin Ireland. Although I took a great point and shoot camera with some Leica lens on the trip – I ended up using my iPhone for many shots. The apps available for the iPhone make photography super fun with instant feedback! Here are a couple of my favorite iPhone shots from the trip:

Quebec City

Living in California caused my wife and I to yearn for a little Holiday Season snow like we had growing up in Montreal, Canada. So last Monday we flew home to Montreal, rented a car and drove to Quebec City for a couple of days. I believe Quebec City is the best kept secret in North America. If you want the feel of old Europe – you don’t have to leave the continent. Here are a few Quebec City images:

I Never Thought I Would be a …

… a Wedding Photographer. If you had of asked me eight years ago if I would be photographing brides and grooms for a living I surely would have ended up on the floor doubled over in a laughing fit. Yet here I am. If you want to know how I got here – just read my little “about me” up above.

So here I am again – I never thought I would be a writer. Funny how this photographic journey of mine has led to several writing opportunities. (Writing? – I don’t ever remember doing well in English at school). So now I get to fire up my word-processor on a regular basis and create all sorts of stories and articles on the subject of photography. If you have an interest in photography check out some of the links below.

Who knows if this writing thing continues – maybe there’s a novel in my future?

A Couple of Days Down in Key West Florida

I just spent a couple of days in Florida with my wife visiting our son Jeff and his wife Lisa. We spent Sunday and Monday down in Key West – swimming, shopping and drinking the odd – Rum Runner! The warm tropical air made the short visit feel like a week long vacation. I could get use to the tropical thing! Here are a couple of snaps taken on our Canon G11 point and shoot.

The Camera That Started it All

Weekends with Family

One of my favorite things to do after a hard weeks work is to spend time with my kids on the weekend – usually Sunday afternoon. This is getting harder to do, because one son lives in Florida and my youngest just announced he is moving to Santa Barbara (I am jealous). My oldest son usually comes with his wife and two little ones to swim, BBQ and watch a movie. These are my favorite times of the week. Be sure to slow down a little and enjoy time with your loved ones! That is what life is really about.

Although I love my two granddaughters dearly – they are the two most difficult subjects I have ever tried to photograph. They seem to be always moving in opposite directions. I had to bribe them with Klondike Ice Cream Bars to get this shot, but it was worth it!

A New Challenge

Last week I was in Vegas hanging out with a group of wedding and portrait photographers. The occasion was an event called “Skip’s Summer School”. It was a short three day educational gathering where we all had the chance to listen to some of the best portrait and wedding photographers in the world.

Whenever I attend seminars or workshops I like to take detailed notes and review them as soon as get home. I then choose my five most important “take aways” and devise a plan to implement them into my photographic style or business. This blog post is one of those five items.

While I tend to post images from weddings and engagement sessions quite often, I don’t seem to post about other things too much. That is going to change today. I intend to post on a regular basis with a goal of five posts a week. Maybe we should call it “The William Challenge”! Be sure to call me on it if I am slacking.

William’s Excellent Adventure

Sorry I have not posted in a couple of weeks. (many new images and posts coming soon). I just completed a 12 day whirlwind adventure. It all started on Wednesday March 3rd driving to Las Vegas where I spend two days with the awesome Australian photographer Marcus Bell as part of the WPPI (Wedding & Portraits International) convention. It was a very inspiring experience. Friday evening March 5th it was back in the car with my wife and Canadian wedding photographer friend, Amy Britton, for the drive back to Los Angeles. We pulled in around 10 PM. On Saturday March 6th Amy and I photographed Heather and Casey’s wedding here in Santa Clarita. Sunday morning was spent downloading and doing some preliminary post production work. (Wedding images and post due later today or tomorrow). Late Sunday we flew back to Las Vegas just in time to attend the WPPI welcome reception. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (March 8 – 10) were spent at the convention speaking in the Buckeye Color Lab booth where my work was displayed and attending a live broadcast of Fridayphotoschool with Will Crockett and Sarah Petty. I am so honored to be part of the Fridayphotoschool organization. I spent most of Wednesday evening doing what “stays in Vegas” with a bunch of fellow photographer friends. Finally got to bed around 2 AM just in time to hear the alarm go off at 6 AM Thursday morning. Jumped on a 8 AM flight to Los Angeles. Got home just in time to unpack and repack and drive up north to Napa Valley with my wife and Amy. After a great Indian dinner we crashed around 10 PM. It rained on Friday – so we spent most of the day driving around Napa and Sonoma wine tasting and scouting for our two weekend Shoots. On Saturday Amy and I photographed an engagement session for Gabrielle and Drew, including a large group bike ride (images coming soon). On Sunday March 14, Amy and I photographed Gabrielle and Drew’s fun wedding at the Fairmont Inn and Spa in Sonoma (images coming soon). On Monday we headed down to San Francisco just in time for a great lunch in Chinatown. We then met up with Serena and Conrad to photograph their engagement session at The Palace of Fine Arts, Crissy Field and Baker Beach. We then all joined Serena and Conrad for a great dinner on the beach – thanks Conrad! (Images coming soon). My wife and I then said goodbye to Amy – she was planning to spend a couple of days in SF. We left San Francisco at 8:30 PM and rolled into L.A, at 2:00 AM . We unpacked and went to bed at 2:30 AM, only to be awakened by one of L.A’s famous 4.4 earthquakes at 4:04 AM.

I am just getting back into the swing of things. I love what I do – thats what makes adventures like this easy.

Little Munchkins

Wedding Photography Video

On Wednesday Matt Sutherland from Matrimony Pictures joined Joey Carman and me for a fun filled afternoon of movie making. Joey and I were shooting a short video to post on our upcoming workshop blog – WIJC-Series. Of course Joey could not leave without setting the timer and taking a group photo. Video should be available in a couple of weeks. It was a fun day – thanks Matt and Joey!
